About Us

Nestled in the heart of Kingston 16 at 5 Deanery Road, Clan Carthy Primary School stands as a beacon of educational excellence with over five decades of proud service to the Jamaican community. Founded in 1970 on lands generously donated by the McCarthy Family of Scottish origin, our school began as an extension of Franklin Town Primary before blossoming into its own distinguished institution with the opening of a Canadian Government-donated building. The name 'Clan Carthy' reflects our Scottish heritage, with 'Clan' meaning family - a value that remains central to our school culture today. Under the inspiring motto 'Be the Best of Whatever You Are,' we nurture 635 students daily, providing not only quality education but also a comprehensive breakfast programme that ensures every child starts their day ready to learn. Our legacy of excellence spans academics, arts, and athletics. We have proudly produced world-class athletes including Wayne Pinnock (Long Jump), Brittany Anderson (Hurdles), and Sunshine Girls netball stars Shanice Beckford and Althea Byfield, as well as celebrated artistes like Ding Dong and Wayne Wonder. Our recent achievements include sixteen trophies at the 2025 JCDC Festival of the Performing Arts, including the prestigious Marcus Garvey Award for the most outstanding Junior Institution. Led by Principal Winsome Reid and Vice Principal Hortense Reynolds, our dedicated team creates an environment where every student can discover and develop their unique talents through our vibrant co-curricular programmes, including Red Cross, Cub Scouts, 4-H, Brownies, and Builders Club.
